News
Dancing for the Dogs was held on Saturday March 10, 2012 at the Historic Tidewater Inn. The event was amazing and so successful!
Because of the overwhelming community support, Talbot Humane, Caroline Humane, and Bay Water Animal Rescue each received $15,000 from the event. The money will be used for spay/neuter services and medical needs of the animals in our care!
Talbot Humane wishes to thank those who made the evening such a success! The Dancing for the Dogs team, led by chairwoman Amanda Showell-Cook and Co-chair Peggy Geisler, the dancers- professional and celebrity, sponsors, donors and all who came out and generously gave in order to support Talbot Humane, Caroline Humane and Bay Water Animal Rescue. We are already looking forward to year 2- Saturday March 9, 2013, again at the Tidwater Inn!

It is true, if we all do what we can, we make a HUGE difference together.
Run UNLEASHED with Talbot Humane!
Unleashed is a charity marathon training program benefiting the important work of Talbot Humane. Set your personal goal:
Marathon
Half Marathon
Marathon Relay Team
10K
Amazing, but true! You can train for a marathon or a half-marathon in your spare time! Just a little courage, a belief in yourself, and a love of animals is all it takes to get you started. Let the UNLEASHED coaches and your teammates help with the rest!
Step 1. Get Off the Couch! Join us for a Free 10-Week Preconditioning Program, Saturday, March 10, 8 am Idlewild Park, Easton. You can be a total couch potato now and be ready for the Baltimore Marathon Running Festival in October. Dust off your sneakers and join Unleashed to begin building stamina and endurance without getting the injuries typical of doing too much too fast. Before you know it, you’ll be running 3 miles and ready to start marathon training.
Step 2. Train with Talbot Humane for the Baltimore Marathon Running Festival! We offer novice runners, weekend warriors, and seasoned athletes an opportunity to train in a group setting and to give back to the community at the same time. Runners commit to raising $500 during their training to support our four-legged friends as they wait for good homes. That’s not a lot to ask for an opportunity to become extraordinary and a local hero!
For novice runners and first-time marathoners, UNLEASHED offers the popular run:walk training method of just two 30-45 minute runs on your own during the week and one long group run on Saturday mornings that gradually builds, mile by mile, to the full racing distance. All run:walk training is non-competitive, supportive and done at your pace!
For repeat marathoners and experienced runners, we offer all the amenities of the run:walk program, plus coaching support to help you improve your personal record.

Garry began his career with Talbot Humane as a volunteer. It all started when he made a promise to his beloved cat. Before she passed away he promised to volunteer his time a Talbot Humane to give love and compassion to kitties in need. From the beginning Garry was dependable and compassionate, coming in to help care for the cats daily- even on holidays. TALBOT HUMANE is the only shelter on Maryland’s Eastern Shore to make it into the qualifying heat of the ASPCA $100K Save More Lives Challenge, one of 108 shelters nationwide. We are elated to pass along the news that our 2011 Enclosure Sponsorship Program raised $11,050 for the animals. We launched the campaign last year by offering local businesses, friends and families a unique opportunity to put their name on a safe, comfortable enclosure at the shelter to house animals waiting for their forever homes. The response has been so gratifying that it is our hope to double the amount we raise in 2012- already reaching over $11,500 as of February 2012!
In the year ahead, we will dedicate the funds contributed by enclosure sponsors to the Talbot Humane Spay Neuter program. With your help, not only will every animal leaving our adoption center be altered, we will be able to continue providing low-cost spay neuter service to our community. Your support will bring us one step closer to meeting our goal of preventing unwanted litters which will reduce the number of animals coming through our doors each year.
- A highly visible plaque with your name, to be displayed at your sponsored area (all sponsorships expire December 31, 2012)
- Acknowledgement in our newsletter and on our website
- Grateful hearts of the animals your sponsorship will help!
We hope that you will choose to sponsor an enclosure at Talbot Humane. To do this simply download the Sponsorship form 2012 here and return to our office. By considering this opportunity your donation will be local, simple, direct, visible, and immediately effective.
Your gift will make a difference.

After returning to the area after several years, Denise re-joined the Talbot Humane team, this time as an animal care technician. Since her return, Denise has set an amazing example by always striving to ensure each job is done properly and done well. These qualities along with her compassion for the animals and sense of teamwork are only a few of the many reasons why she was voted Employee of the 4th Quarter by a landslide.
Thank you Denise for joining our team, we at Talbot Humane are thankful to have someone so conscientious and compassionate caring for our shelter pets. We give you 2 Paws Up!
One Step Closer
Generation Humane
Humane Education is an important program for Talbot Humane. The ultimate goal says Executive Director Patty Quimby is to raise the next generation to be Generation Humane. Thanks to a grant from The Social Justice Committee from the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Easton, and the youth in their Religious Education Class, along with funds from the Talbot Humane Education Fund, we are one step closer. 110 age appropriate books relating to empathy for animals and the human animal bond have been purchased and will soon be distributed to each school in Talbot County. “Our hope is the children of our community will find joy in reading, and joy in these stories which share how important animals are to our lives.” states Quimby.
Adoption Coordinator, Julia Laramore was voted Employee of the 3rd Quarter by her co-workers. Julia began her career with Talbot Humane in October of 2004 as a part-time animal care technician. Through the years, Julia has shown her dedication to the animals and the organization. Julia is helpful, kind and compassionate. A few of the many kind words said about Julia by her co-workers: ” she shows great dedication to finding our animals forever homes”, “Julia is willing to help wherever she is needed”, and “she does a great job at matching families to new pets.”
We at Talbot Humane are proud to have Julia as part of our team. Thank you Julia for your hard work and dedication to the animals of Talbot county, for this we give you 2 PAWS UP!

Talbot Humane and Talbot County Animal Control would like to remind citizens during the times of high winds, heavy rain and potential flooding to PLEASE bring your pets indoors. Talbot Humane will lend crates to those in need during this time. Do not leave dogs tethered out or in containments such as kennels, sheds or any other structure which may flood or collapse. Please keep cats indoors during and after the event. Animals suffer from stress just as humans during extremes and may behave erratically, or not recognize their surroundings. If you see a problem within Talbot County, please contact our office at (410)822-0107.
If you are in a danger zone, please plan to leave well in advance of the impending weather event. You will want to contact friends or family outside of the immediate danger area to stay. Contact local hotels to see if they are pet friendly, or will waive their policy during an emergency. In Easton the following hotels will accommodate pet owners- Tidewater Inn, Days Inn, Comfort Inn and Inn at 202 Dover. These businesses ask that owners call in advance to find out their requirements.
The following animal boarding facilities are also open and able to board your pets: Kevertin Pet Resort, Tri Crown Inn for Pets, and Top of the Bay Pet Lodge. Please call in advance, they are filling quickly.
In the event the Social Services Shelter at Easton High School is opened, the Talbot Animal Disaster Services shelter will also open to house pets for those residing in the shelter. Please be advised this shelter IS NOT a drop off for your pets- it is only for those residents living in the shelter. This shelter should also be used as a means of last resort- it will be stressful for you and your pets.
When evacuating your home with pets, owners should bring the following items:
- A crate or carrier for each pet
- Medical records, a photo, veterinarians name and number, and any medication for each pet
- Food for 3 days for each pet
- Bedding, litter, cleaning supplies for each pet
- Sturdy leashes, toys and any special items needed for your pet
Pets suffer from stress during these times just like us. The best way to protect you and your pets is to be prepared. Have a plan, and do not wait until the last minute to act.
As an open admission shelter, we often receive dogs with fear, anxiety, separation and excitement issues. Thundershirts help us manage these dogs and bring them one step closer to their forever homes. Your Thundershirt donation will be put to excellent use helping to transition one of our wonderful dogs back to a forever home. Interested? Just click this icon to start helping the dogs in need at Talbot Humane today!
As you may imagine, working in animal rescue is often stressful, and demanding- both emotionally and physically. It takes a special person to be able to handle thousands of animals a year, always with love and compassion. Talbot Humane is so very fortunate, we have a wonderful staff of compassionate and caring individuals. Each year, we have the privilege of recognizing those who have gone above and beyond.
This year, Dayniese Hurley is the recipient of the 2011 Above and Beyond Award. Dayniese is the epitome of what it means to go that extra mile. In her 11 years with Talbot Humane, Dayniese has always put the animals’ needs first. Her dedication to the animals is proven by her efforts in placing many animals which otherwise would not have a second chance into rescue groups- 155 last year alone! She works diligently to find foster homes for upwards of 200 animals annually while she herself has fostered well over 150 animals during her time at Talbot Humane. Dayniese is always willing to help a co-worker, volunteer or member of the public, no matter how busy she may be. For all of this and more, we thank you Dayniese.
Dayniese was also named Employee of the 2nd Quarter by her co-workers for her dedication to the animals, and helpful nature with staff, volunteers and the public. Talbot Humane feels blessed to have such a dedicated friend on our team.

Dogs entering the Talbot Humane Adoption Center that test positive for heartworms will continue to receive treatment thanks to support from Odie’s Fund. Based at the Community Foundation for the National Capital Region, Odie’s Fund provides grants to animal shelters and dog rescue organizations to help pay for veterinary treatment and emergency supplies.
The donor-advised fund was founded by Easton residents Simone and Greg Rones. “We are very impressed with how hard the staff at Talbot Humane is working to help the area’s homeless pets,” said Simone Rones. “We are honored to help them provide lifesaving heartworm treatments to dogs in their care.”
The grant will fund treatment for twenty heartworm-positive dogs that are waiting to be adopted. In addition, the Rones are also providing Talbot Humane with a “heartworm guarantee.” They have assured the organization that funds will be available to pay for treatment for any heartworm-positive dog that enters the Adoption Center during the current fiscal year.
Talbot Humane Executive Director Brian Metcalf thanked Simone and Greg Rones for their generous donation. “People often do not understand the financial challenges that go along with Talbot Humane’s commitment to our animals’ care,” he explained.
“To make sure each of the pets that we offer for adoption begins life in its new home as a healthy member of the family requires a significant commitment of resources. We greatly appreciate this donation from Odie’s Fund as recognition of our efforts for the community.”
Simone and Greg Rones established Odie’s Fund in 2005 in memory of their basset hound, Odie, that they had adopted in 1996 from a basset hound rescue group. “It is wonderful that one rescued pup is living on through this fund to help so many others,” added Metcalf.
It is not usually a cause for celebration when an animal has been at the Talbot Humane Adoption Center for six months. However, the cat the staff named “Vernon” was not the usual stray feline.
When the large orange and white, medium-haired cat was brought to Talbot Humane, it was found to have several jagged bite marks on its neck. Presumed to have been bitten by a wild animal, the staff had two options—euthanize the cat, or provide care for a six-month quarantine period.
With the Adoption Center already overcrowded with healthy and adoptable cats and kittens, providing appropriate long-term space would be a challenge. The staff, though, had already discovered that Vernon was a gentle giant and affectionate, despite having what they knew must be painful wounds. They decided Vernon was special and worth the extended commitment of time, effort and resources necessary to getting him adoptable.
On September 3rd, Talbot Humane Executive Director Brian Metcalf gathered the staff together. “You are here today to celebrate one of the many achievements that make Talbot Humane different from most other animal welfare agencies,” he said. “What we are about to celebrate is what makes me so proud to be a part of Talbot Humane, and to have the opportunity to work with each of you.”
Talbot Humane is enhancing the adoptability of its canine population with a new training program for both volunteers and dogs.
More than fifty volunteers recently attended two Positive Paws Training sessions. The volunteers and staff received formal training manuals developed by Talbot Humane’s Animal Care Supervisor, Dayniese Hurley, along with instruction in dog handling.
Through the new program, volunteers are trained how to teach a dog to respond appropriately to its caretaker and environment. Each time the dog is taken for a walk, it receives positive reinforcement for proper behavior.
“Positive reinforcement is the presentation of something pleasant or rewarding immediately following a behavior,” explained Brian Metcalf, Executive Director of Talbot Humane. “It makes the behavior more likely to occur in the future and is one of the most powerful tools for shaping or changing the animal’s behavior and making it more readily adoptable.”
The ultimate goal of this new program, according to Hurley, its creator, “is to significantly enhance kennel behavior and shorten the average length of stay of our canine friends.”
Metcalf lauded Hurley’s efforts in developing the new program, which has been integrated into Talbot Humane’s daily protocols. “Dayniese is always looking for new and creative ways to improve the adoptability of our pets,” he said. “My hat goes off to Dayniese and to all of the amazingly dedicated dog walker volunteers who are following through with her visionary plan. It clearly has had a very positive effect on the overall behavior of our canine population.”
