Lives are saved thanks to friends like you!

At the end of April, Anastasia, a 1yr old Parsons Terrier arrived at Talbot Humane. Stray, scared and very pregnant, our staff provided for her and gave her extra TLC each day. Unfortunately like so many other animals that come through our doors, no one ever came searching for this sweet girl.

Last Friday morning Anastasia went into labor and staff anxiously awaited the new arrivals. Very quickly we realized something was wrong and rushed her to the veterinarian. While the puppies could not be saved, the doctors at Veterinary Medical Center saved Anastasia’s life. The happy ending is she is recovering at Talbot Humane and has a new family waiting for her once she is well enough to go home.This week Officer Brittingham received a call after hours for a dog with severe injuries dueto a scuffle with a neighbor’s pet. Lilly, the black lab mix was not doing well and the owner could not afford veterinary treatment. Wanting what was best for her dog, the owner surrendered Lilly to Talbot Humane.

Officer Brittingham rushed Lilly to Veterinary Medical Center where they quickly went to work, cleaning her wounds, inserting drains and starting her on antibiotics. She is expected to make a full recovery.

Situations like these are not uncommon at Talbot Humane. We do our very best for each animal entering our care. It is part of our mission to place every treatable and adoptable pet into a new forever home. But, to provide care for pets like Anastasia and Lilly is expensive. The medical bills for these 2 deserving pups have already risen to over $1,500. I’m sure you can guess, this will take a big bite out of our Shiloh Fund. This fund was created to provide special needs care beyond the basics to Talbot Humane animals.

This is where you come in.

We need your help today so we can provide care such as this to future Lillys and Anastasias. It is because of friends like you that we are able to fulfill our mission daily. Talbots of Easton Helps Talbot Humane this Saturday!

This Saturday May 18th, Talbots of Easton will be helping the animals of Talbot Humane! They will collect food and monetary donations all day to help feed and care for our pets during the winter months. We will be at the Talbottown Shopping Center from 11a-2p with information about our shelter, animals for adoption and goodies to give away! All customers who make a donation receive a discount on your purchase that day. We are excited to partner with Talbots, and we hope you choose to support businesses that give back to the community.

Pit Beef at Talbot Humane Friday May 17th

Plan to have lunch to help the animals of Talbot Humane Friday May 17th! We will have Jamie’s famous pit beef and pit turkey for sale! $8 for a sandwich, drink (bottled water, coke, diet coke, or sprite) and a bag of chips! Fill your tummy and help the animals at the same time! We will be set up in the parking lot of the old Southern States building right next door to Talbot Humane.

Cinco De CAT-O at Talbot Humane

As of May 1, 2013 there were 86 felines in our care. Most of these are wonderful adult cats looking for a loving home. As cat lovers know, felines, when well cared for and living indoors can live to upwards of 15-20 years! So a 5 yr old cat still has so much to give. In an effort to place our adults before kittens season kicks into high gear we are offering all cats 5 years and older at the bargain adoption fee of only $5 for a limited time. All interested parties must still submit an adoption application and follow the regular process.

Remember, all of our cats and kittens are spayed or neutered, vaccinated- including the rabies vaccine, FeLV/FIV tested, wormed, receive flea and tick treatment and microchipped. ID saves LIVES- ID Specials for April at Talbot Humane!

It is a proven fact. Identification SAVES lives. According to the ASPCA Professional Blog, the rate of stray dogs and cats being returned to their owners/guardians “hovers between 10-30% for dogs and less than 5% for cats.” In Talbot county our rates are 37% and 5% respectively. This is a horribly low number! Your pets cannot tell us where they live, or, your phone number. We need owners to be proactive. Even the most responsible pet owner could have a pet go missing. Our goal is for every loved pet to be returned home when lost. But, for this, we need pet owner’s help!

Before disaster strikes- properly identifying your pet.

The best ID combination consists of a microchip, plus a pet license tag and a personalized tag hanging from the collar. Having just one form of ID may not work—pets can lose their collars or the microchip information may not be current in the local animal shelter licensing or national microchip databases. Even indoor-only animals need identification—in case someone leaves a door or window open and they escape unnoticed, for example. Pet ID is also important in case of an emergency or when disaster strikes your home or neighborhood. If there is a fire or a natural disaster, it may be necessary to evacuate your companion animals even if you are not home at the time.

Call your local animal control agency, veterinary offices and neighbors immediately. Do not assume your beloved pet “will find their way home,” because the fact is, all too often they don’t. Make sure your microchip information is up to date annually, with current addresses and phone numbers. Purchase your county license annually. Talbot Humane keeps a database with every license sold. so many times animals are returned by the good citizens who find the pets- BECAUSE they are properly identified.

Talbot Humane Pet Pantry Celebrates 5th Year!

Simply amazing. Those are really the only words to describe the community support to help feed hungry pets in our area. When Talbot Humane began our Pet Pantry in 2008, we really had no idea it would take off in such a fabulous way. Our goal was simple, to help owners who are faced with the prospect of surrendering their pets because they can no longer afford to purchase food. Many needy families in our community are loving pet owners, but, may be having a difficult time providing food for both their families and their pets during these trying financial times.

When we started we had a few pantry users. Within one year we were serving close to 100 friends in the community, and these numbers continue to grow. Today dispensing more than 2 tons of food annually, this program is truly life saving. The beauty of this program is that every bag and can of food has been donated by our generous community. We have even had friends who used the pantry, donate back once they have gotten on their feet. Others have chosen to volunteer with Talbot Humane so they can give back too.

Over the past 5 years, we have seen pet pantries open in shelters in our surrounding counties. We now even have a group who’s sole goal is to collect food for the shelter pantries- Pet Pantries of Caroline, Dorchester, and Talbot Counties. Our work isn’t done yet. There are still days where we are down to only a few bags of food on our shelves. We are always accepting dry dog and cat food for the Talbot Humane Pet Pantry. Great thanks is owed to everyone who has donated to this project.

Thank you friends for all you do. This is just one more example, if we each do a little, together we truly make a major difference for the animals.
