Help Us Win The ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge!

We have made it to the Qualifying Heat for the

ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge!

TALBOT HUMANE is the only  shelter on Maryland’s Eastern Shore to make it into the qualifying heat of the ASPCA $100K Save More Lives Challenge, one of 108 shelters nationwide. It’s a competition that inspires shelters and their communities to come up with innovative ways to save at least 300 more dogs and cats within a three-month period than were saved during the same three months the year before. And we could win between $5,000 and $125,000! Our staff and volunteers are raring to take a shot at saving more lives than before. That’s where you come in.

The only way for Talbot Humane to get into the 100K challenge is for you – our community – to vote for us. We need a lot of votes because out of 108 shelters vying to get into the Challenge, only 50 are going to be accepted, and they’re the ones with the most votes from their community.
From April 5 to April 16, we need you to go to VoteToSaveLives.org and cast your vote for Talbot Humane EVERY DAY.  Send the link to family and friends and tell them to vote so we can save more lives. It takes less than a minute and your passion to get us into position to save at least 300 more lives this year…and to win BIG for the animals!

 UPDATE:

TUESDAY APRIL 17th-

WE MADE IT TO THE NEXT ROUND!

It takes a village….

To call it a rescue doesn’t begin to do it justice. To say they saved his life seems woefully inadequate. What Talbot Humane’s volunteers, caretakers and Keno’s adoptive family did was save that dog’s soul.

Keno was surrendered to Talbot Humane on Dec. 22, 2010, a terrified, unsocialized, one-year-old brindle Pit Bull. He spent his first year as a puppy in an outside kennel with little attention from his owners, which left him fearful of people and just about everything else.  When he arrived at Talbot Humane, he cowered in a corner of his kennel and shook with fear. He soon learned that if he barked at people who walked by his kennel, they would go away.  This is how Keno saw the world.

It wasn’t long before Keno developed severe kennel stress, according to Dayniese Hurley, Talbot Humane’s Animal Care Supervisor. In his kennel, he was aggressive to anyone who tried to work with him, making it impossible for Hurley to place him in the shelter’s adoption program.  “I knew we needed a change,” said Hurley. “We met with the dog walkers to try to figure out how we could help Keno.”

Hurley called in a professional dog trainer, who determined that Keno probably would never be an adoptable dog. But the pack of volunteer dog walkers at Talbot Humane wouldn’t take that for an answer.  Susan Kanicki and Kay Klein, veteran dog walkers and trainers at the shelter, are two of the volunteers who really fought for Keno.  “We put our hearts and souls into him,” Susan said.

“Those of us who were there knew that Keno was not so tough,” she recalled. “He was just a very, very fearful dog. But also very smart and sensitive.” Kanicki and other committed volunteers worked together to develop a plan for Keno. Progress was slow. Keno was very cautious, but gradually the volunteers earned his trust, and those who  came to work with him on a very regular earned his loyalty.

“We challenged him most every day,” said Susan. For months, volunteers came consistently and took Keno for long walks, until he felt confident and well-supported by his walkers. He learned not to be so fearful of loud noises and new people.  One day they decided to put him in a car. “I got on one side and pulled and Kay got on the other side and pushed until we got him in the back seat,” Susan said. “He just sat there and drooled all over me.”

Sometimes Kay would take Keno off-site for a car ride or a visit to her house so he could have some quiet time away from the shelter. Susan cooked chicken for Keno regularly and used it to train the dog to walk by people he didn’t know without fear. “The day I knew he was saved,” said Susan, “was the day I saw he was no longer fearful, but curious about the world around him.”

Eventually, Hurley felt like Keno had progressed enough to be placed in the adoption program. “He was one of the lucky ones who got the time and attention he needed. Keno owes his life to the dog walkers,” Hurley said. “They worked really hard on him.”

Once Keno was up for adoption, it was still months before he found a home. He was still a challenging dog, and very fearful of men. Kay, Susan and other volunteers kept their fingers crossed that someday someone would walk into the shelter and see what they saw in Keno—a beautiful, magnificent, smart dog.

Then, one day in August, in walked Monica Gault. Keno’s life was about to take the best turn ever.

Monica came to Talbot Humane looking for a dog. “I passed his cage by a couple of times because it said Pit Bull, and you know, you hear the horror stories,” explained Monica. “But the third time I walked by he brought me a toy, and that really got me.” Monica visited Keno frequently for a week, to take him for walks and get acquainted. He was never fearful of her. They had a strong connection from the start.

Kay and Susan were cautiously hopeful that Monica would adopt Keno. Kay drove Keno to Monica’s house for a visit, and the two volunteers shared everything they knew about Keno. They wanted to make sure Monica understood Keno’s history and knew how to help him. It wasn’t long before Monica knew that Keno was her dog.

Following his adoption from Talbot Humane, Keno went to basic obedience training, was housetrained quickly, and doesn’t chew on anything.  “Little by little, he has come out of his shell,” said Monica. “The more comfortable I get with Keno, you can really see a metamorphosis.”

Today, Kay and Susan still visit Keno, and he is excited to see them. He walks confidently with Monica through Easton’s downtown area, without being fearful of men. And Keno stares adoringly at Monica as they snuggle up together on the sofa in his new home. “He’s just all mine!” Monica said.  “A smart, lovable, playful dog.”

And a lucky dog.

Bark in the Park is just around the corner!

It is hard to believe we have seen a year  pass since our first ever Bark in the Park Dog Walk and Festival. October 15th, 2011 will be here before we know it offering us the opportunity to celebrate our love of pets and our mission to help the animals in need on the Mid-Shore!

There are so many reasons to be excited for this year’s event!  We have the return of the Dog Walk through Historic Easton, the fun dog show, Corporal Lee & Flex of the EPD, Delmarva Dock Dogs and much more. This year we have invited other animal welfare organizations from across the state to share the good work of what they do and find homes for their pets in need.   Our local veterinarians will be present providing much needed information on a plethora of topics.  Included topics will be pet acupuncture, nutrition and geriatric pet care to name only a few.

Yes, there will be food, shopping, micro-chip clinics, pet portraits, Rick Kollinger and his fun caricatures,  a kids tent full of fun things to do and many other neat ways to spend the day.   The most important, and wonderful part of our event is seeing our community join together in support of our mission, rejoice in our innate love of pets, and have a day of fun, fellowship and fundraising for the animals.  Rain or Shine (let’s all pray for SHINE) we hope to see you at Idlewild Park, Saturday October 15th.  Dog walk registration at 9a, Walk at 10a, Festival to follow.

For more information on our event, or to become the leader of your own pack and raise funds for the pets, visit http://talbothumane.org/2nd-annual-bark-in-the-park

I hope to see you on October 15th, I would love to thank you in person for your continued support!

Prepare and Protect Your Pets!

Talbot Humane and Talbot County Animal Control would like to remind citizens during the times of high winds, heavy rain and potential flooding to PLEASE bring your pets indoors. Talbot Humane will lend crates to those in need during this time.  Do not leave dogs tethered out or in containments such as kennels, sheds or any other structure which may flood or collapse.  Please keep cats indoors during and after the event.  Animals suffer from stress just as humans during extremes and may behave erratically, or not recognize their surroundings.  If you see a problem within Talbot County, please contact our office at (410)822-0107.

If you are in a danger zone, please plan to leave well in advance of the impending weather event. You will want to contact friends or family outside of the immediate danger area to stay.  Contact local hotels to see if they are pet friendly, or will waive their policy during an emergency.  In Easton the following hotels will accommodate pet owners- Tidewater Inn, Days Inn, Comfort Inn and Inn at 202 Dover.  These businesses ask that owners call in advance to find out their requirements.

The following animal boarding facilities are also open and able to board your pets:  Kevertin Pet Resort, Tri Crown Inn for Pets, and Top of the Bay Pet Lodge.  Please call in advance, they are filling quickly.

In the event the Social Services Shelter at Easton High School is opened, the Talbot Animal Disaster Services shelter will also open to house pets for those residing in the shelter.  Please be advised this shelter IS NOT a drop off for your pets- it is only for those residents living in the shelter.  This shelter should also be used as a means of last resort- it will be stressful for you and your pets.

When evacuating your home with pets, owners should bring the following items:

  • A crate or carrier for each pet
  • Medical records, a photo, veterinarians name and number, and any medication for each pet
  • Food for 3 days for each pet
  • Bedding, litter, cleaning supplies for each pet
  • Sturdy leashes, toys and any special items needed for your pet

Pets suffer from stress during these times just like us.   The best way to protect you and your pets is to be prepared. Have a plan, and do not wait until the last minute to act.
